The new unit, which is equipped with a specialized heart treatment kit, will double the hospital's daily diagnostic capacity from 50 to 100 scans, improving both the speed and accuracy of diagnoses, particularly for critical conditions like cardiac diseases, cancer, and trauma injuries.

President William Ruto has inaugurated a state-of-the-art CT Scan unit at the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital.

The Sh130 million advanced machine, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), is expected to dramatically enhance the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and contribute to the government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to high-quality healthcare services across the country.

The commissioning of the AI-powered CT scan is a major milestone in Kenya’s health sector, marking a key step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). According to a statement from the Ministry of Health on October 29, 2025, the government remains committed to ensuring that every Kenyan has access to affordable, high-quality healthcare.

“The Government remains committed to achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that every Kenyan can access quality and affordable healthcare without financial hardship,” the statement read in part.

The installation of the CT scan unit is part of the broader Medical Equipment Services (MES) Programme, a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative designed to enhance the capabilities of public hospitals by providing them with critical medical equipment and maintenance services.

Through this model, private companies install and maintain the equipment, while hospitals only pay for the services they use, making it a cost-effective solution for expanding healthcare access.

“Implemented under the Medical Equipment Services Programme, this public–private partnership model enables private players to install and maintain critical medical equipment, while hospitals pay only for the services delivered,” the Ministry of Health explained.

At Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital, one of the busiest healthcare facilities in the region, the new AI-powered technology will revolutionize diagnostic services. The machine is expected to help healthcare professionals provide faster and more precise diagnoses, leading to improved patient outcomes.

“The newly installed AI-powered CT Scan machine, equipped with a heart treatment kit, will double the hospital’s capacity to 100 scans per day, improving diagnostic efficiency and patient outcomes,” the Ministry added.

This initiative is just the beginning. The government plans to expand this model, rolling out more than 70 advanced medical machines across health facilities nationwide. The goal is to ensure that all Kenyans, regardless of their location, have access to modern diagnostic tools.

“Under this innovative model, more than 70 advanced machines will be installed in health facilities across the country, expanding access to modern diagnostic services and advancing the goal of accessible, equitable, and quality healthcare for all Kenyans,” the Ministry revealed.

The launch of the Nakuru CT Scan Unit highlights the government’s broader vision of creating a resilient, technology-driven healthcare system. This initiative aligns with the ongoing push for Universal Health Coverage, aiming to provide equitable healthcare to all citizens and improve overall health outcomes across the nation.
